Understanding the Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a condition that affects many people. It can make everyday life challenging, but understanding its symptoms is the first step towards managing it. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available.

What is OCD?

OCD is a mental health disorder where people have unwanted thoughts, feelings, or urges (obsessions) that make them feel anxious. To try to get rid of these feelings, they might do certain actions or rituals (compulsions) over and over.

Common Symptoms of OCD

          Obsessions:

  • Fear of Germs: Some people with OCD might be very afraid of dirt or germs. They might worry about getting sick.
  • Need for Order: Others may feel very uncomfortable if things are not in a certain order or if they don’t look "just right."
  • Unwanted Thoughts: People might experience disturbing or scary thoughts that they can't control.

          Compulsions:

  • Excessive Cleaning: To cope with the fear of germs, a person might wash their hands many times, even when they are already clean.
  • Checking: Some people might check things repeatedly, like making sure a door is locked or the stove is off.
  • Counting or Repeating: A person might count numbers or repeat words to feel safe or to prevent something bad from happening.

How OCD Affects Daily Life

OCD can take up a lot of time and energy. It can make it hard to focus on work, school, or spending time with friends and family. But it's important to remember that OCD is treatable.
